The Root of Conflict, in any sized company- big or small.
It’s bound to happen eventually. It doesn’t happen without warning.
When it does, the proper response can build respect in a workplace and bring departments closer together. When the improper response is given, respect waivers, employees become hyper-critical and the culture of the company instantly darkens.
Conflict.
If the word didn’t sound so phonetically pleasant, you wouldn’t mind that it defines an ‘incompatibility between parties’. The reality of the subject, is that unchecked conflict can often cause:
Loss in Productivity: The team is mentally wrapped around the conflicts and unmanaged differences will
creep into Service Ticket Response, Customer Satisfaction and Sales Numbers.
Loss in Face Value: The team members who can’t seem to get along will often be viewed by others as
less competent and trustworthy by those in the organization.
Turnover Increases: Those affected by negativity will update their resumes, keep their eye out for something better- while doing a less than favorable job in their current position; and eventually leave your business.
Some would contend, “Conflict is everywhere.” I wholeheartedly disagree. Experience has proven to me that, “The potential for conflict exists, in places where emotions govern choices; not respect.” You can quote me on that. Write that down.
Every day, creates an abundance of opportunity for the people in your workplace to grow and prosper. Most growth happens by requirement, and not out of desire. Don’t believe me? Think about the last time you were criticized, and think of what you did differently- after that conversation.
Chances are- you changed “something” to avoid a repeat performance. Humans do this, as a natural reaction based upon our ‘survival instinct’, which enables “us” to adapt to any given situation- specifically when it can potentially threaten a person’s way of life.

To avoid conflict, it is important to consider understanding each person’s behavior and motivation. It’s not about knowing how a person, ‘ticks’- when it’s more about having the desire to better know your fellow man; because it’s the right thing to do. The DISC Profile and Workplace Motivator Assessments can be a great asset to allow team members to become better acquainted. They’ll learn more about the HOW and WHY of a person they work with, than WHAT and WHEN they did it. It’s about changing their focus- and it’s up to you.
Business Operators are responsible for setting the proper example, for their employees to follow. If the Business Operator is inconsistent with their ability to govern their emotions, the employees will follow.
Here’s a rule of thumb: Master your emotions. Discipline your thoughts. Govern with sincerity.
Write that down.
