CEOs are more than just a business owners, they are visionaries, leaders, and more importantly, bosses; someone employees can look up to for guidance.  Possibly a company role model. Now, having brainstormed this with the team we determined that there are two types of CEOs. Those that are approachable, and those that are not. I look back to my summer internship back in college when I was working in Manhattan for a multi-billion dollar company, their CEO was very unapproachable. However, working here at CharTec, our CEO Alex, is very approachable. One of the many perks of working in a small company is that Alex is right down the hall and I can usually pop in to ask a question (if he’s not fishing that is). Alex is part of our everyday culture, his vision spreads throughout the company on a day-to-day basis; something you don’t often get in a stale, corporate world (although not all corporate words are like that… just look at the awesome example ConnectWise has built)!

So that leads me to the original question of this blog: What is the proper role of a CEO? The answer is never easy, and never simple. You hear this a lot from the team over here at CharTec, but the goal is to work ON your business not IN your business. You need to be working on growing your business, keeping it profitable, seeing what will take your company to the next level. You don’t need to be making service calls, going onsite visiting clients, or even selling managed services. Being a CEO means becoming an overseer of your company. You need to take a step back and take a look at everything from employees to processes and everything in between. By taking a step back, this is the only way that you can see what is going on and ensuring your company is heading in the right direction. So what is it exactly that you’re overseeing? Operations, accounting, sales, marketing, service/support, human resources; what is your contribution to each of these departments? How are you providing leadership and guidance? How are you ensuring each of these departments are living up to and upholding your vision and mission? Makes you wonder doesn’t it?

So let’s think about it from a different angle, what is your current role in the company now? Sure, CEO is an awesome title, but is that what your job function is?
